Any ideas on food and hotel per night costs for a vacation in ZANZIBAR?
Average price.
It depends on how nice a place you want to stay. There are tourist hotels whose prices range anywhere from $20 per night to $300+ per night per room. If you’d like something that’s “nice enough” and has good character, I’d go for something in the $45-$70 range. If you want luxury, I’d go $80-$150.
The best hotel I know of in Zanzibar (Stone Town) is this fabulous amazing little boutique hotel, called Emerson & Green: http://www.emerson-green.com/mainframe.htm. Their two restaurants are amazing, too.
Throughout the beaches, there are tons of nice ones, too.
I wouldn’t stay at an international chain hotel if you can help it. There’s so much nice local stuff that you miss if you stay at the Serena, etc.
As for food, you can eat for as little as $1 per meal, or as much as $20 – but most places that toursts eat in would be in the $5 to $10 range, unless you get a lot of cocktails, of course.
Check out the Lonely Planet or Rough Guides for Tanzania (Zanzibar is the Zan in Tan-ZAN-ia) – which should be available at any Barnes and Noble-type chain bookstore or at Amazon, etc.
