Did you enjoy your vacations growing up?
Kid Vacations
We did not take vacations, cost too much.
We did not rent a cabin by the lake.
We did not take leisurely country drives.
We didn’t even travel to… Fargo.
Our parents were kids from the Depression
you saved a penny and found its brother.
Vacations cost too much, no time for them.
So I began taking my own… side trips
Visited Saskatchewan? I sure did,
also Vancouver and Nova Scotia
Mexico, England, Germany and Rome.
I saw them all, spent hours in each locale.
When I was done I would stack them away
grab my pen and envelopes and stamps
and order more. A steady stream of mail
of enticing photos and maps and facts.

I saw the world in a kid’s ‘sorta’ way.
Books my passport
Perched high up
In my leafy bower
I’d turn those pages
Pictures scour.
By the hour.
I traveled far
I traveled wide.
Never wanting to go inside…
To worlds mundane.
Where things were sane.
