Is Yosemite N.P. or Sequoia/Kings Canyon better for camping with kids?

We’re going out to that section of the world for our vacation in August. I’ve always wanted to see Yosemite, but I’ve heard crazy things about the congestion etc. Sequoia/Kings Canyon sounds less congested, but is it too remote for a 6 year old to hike? We will also have a pop-up trailer. Does Sequoia have enough RV sites? Please let me know. We have to make reservations soon!

Yes, Yosemite is a congested nightmare. Personally, I would do Sequoia with the 6 year old, and Yosemite when he’s a bit older. Yosemite has waterfalls, though, and Sequoia not so much.

I didn’t think Sequoia was that difficult to get reservations for, but they don’t have much in the way of “full hookup” RV sites. More just sites that will fit RVs. Nice thing about the Sequoia area is that there are multiple campgrounds all around the area…14 run by the Park. All but two are first come/first serve. If you want to reserve just to be on the safe side, here is the link.

The General Sequoia Trees are incredible, and there are plenty of easy hikes to take with kids. Check out the General Grant tree, and then drive 30min. and go see the General Sherman Tree, the largest living thing in the world. I’m sure if you look on the website they also have Ranger programs and the like for small kids… I know my parents always made us go.

Can you tell I’m biased? But really, between both Sequoia and Kings National Parks there are a ton of things to do, from hiking to see the big trees to canoeing on Hume Lake (in the bordering Sequoia National forest).

If you do decide to go this route, here’s a list of things to do off the top of my head.
1. Hike to General Sherman Tree
2. Hike to Genreal Grant Tree (both very short, easy hikes).
3. Rent a Canoe at Hume Lake (National Forest).
4. Visit the Buck Rock fire lookout tower (National Forest).
5. Drive down to Boyden Cavern and take a tour (it’s an incredible drive).
6. Drive to Crystal Cave and take a tour
