office vacation calendars
Can you please help me with the academic calendar for a University?

The academic calendar is somewhat confusing. For instance it says the November instruction ends on December 23rd but the session ends one week later. This is a Masters program with each course lasting 8 weeks. The first course went until the date for when the session ends as opposed to the last day of instruction.

Can you please help me when planing vacations etc do I look at when the instruction ends? Do you think the first course went beyond this week because of it being an intro course.

It shows that the office is closed for Christmas so would we have assignments during the holiday week? Or does this mean that we end on December 23rd and the instructor has one week for grades or will we not get a holiday since the next course starts on Jan 7th?

Thanks for your help. You would think when the instruction ends that means that is the end and the session ends the next week for grades.

Accelerated programs often don’t fit within a traditional university calendar, especially when holidays fall into a semester. I suspect there are courses that run in odd ways to compensate for both Thanksgiving and the Christmas holiday. That ‘off’ week can be used to allow for classes to have a final session to make up for a missed night. For example, I suspect that Thursday night classes meet during that last week because the school was closed for Thanksgiving, but the M-W classes won’t. The same thing applies to your question about the Christmas holiday.

Accelerated programs do try to build in vacation breaks but some times it just doesn’t work. The office being closed really does not matter if your class has not met the required number of times during the semester.Just because the staff isn’t working doesn’t necessarily mean classes aren’t still held. Grades are usually submitted within 1 or 2 weeks after a course is over, regardless of if a break is scheduled or not.

Look at your course syllabus. When is the last class session and when are your final assignments due? What has your instructor told you about the end date of the course? Ask them because they are the ones who know the correct answer to your questions.

I’ve worked with accelerated programs for adults a long time. Scheduling is complex and sometimes schools don’t explain things in a way that makes sense…but I hope my answer does!

btw adzooker: It is very common for instruction to end prior to the end of a semester in accelerated programming. All first session 8 week courses end before the end of a 16 week semester . No need to be rude to the asker…oops, looks like s/he deleted her/his answer since it was originally posted!

Take That Summer Vacation
