Solication at work: professional response?

Since I started my job in November, I’ve received about 5 calls a week asking if I want a free satallite, that I’ve won a ‘free’ vacation or that my car warranty is up.

That’s right, the guy who had my phone number (three years ago) before I came used it as his personal phone number too. I still get personal calls for him!

My question is this: I receive a call like this at home, I talk with a representative and ask that my name is removed. I cannot put the work number on the do-not-call list (as per HR requests), so would it be appropriate to ask that my number be removed as it is a WORK number?

OR should I just let it go, even though it has yet to slow down?

It has been my experience that you ask til the cows come home and they will not remove the number, even though it is a business number and the person they are looking for is no longer employed there. I would speak to HR again and let them know what is going on and see if they have another solution. If not then I suppose you’ll just have to let it go.

I feel for you as I had the same thing happen a few years ago, before the days of the do not call list. As soon as we could, the entire company had our numbers put on the list. I can’t imagine why yours would not do the same.
